Purpose of an assessment

The purpose of an assessment is to create learning opportunities for all students; some students can definitely benefit from them. Many people who score high on assessments are challenged with new and more difficult material which develops their minds. All assessments should have a wide range of material, but not too wide that students are not able to comprehend what is being read. When creating an assessment the state looks at the validity; does the assessment task assess what you want it to assess? If students are not able to complete this task then the test must be modified. Transparency, what is the purpose of the assessment? Everyone from the student to the tutor should have a clear meaning of why the test was created and what will the students gain. Assessments should motivate students to challenge their way of thinking and want better for themselves, provide feedback so that the proper steps are taken to modify the test to cater to the student and to provide a grade.
