Morning meeting!

As a teacher candidate I fully understand that the field of education is not an easy one. Each morning is a new day; a day for learning, exploring, and for a new start. During my internship with KIPP Houston I began to adapt to their morning routine system. Morning Meeting, a 20-minute opportunity for students to develop oral language skills, strengthen classroom culture, reset value expectations, and celebrate each other. Students gather together on the carpet to view a daily teacher-created morning message and learn daily news from the student-of-the-day (KIPP). This time is also used to reflect on the day or week before to work out any confusion the students may have on previous lessons.  Daily activities can also be incorporated into morning meeting along with the introduction to a new unit. Morning meeting looks different for every class and grade level. Teachers are in full control of how they want their morning meeting to go; the only thing that is required is everyone must participate! This is a great way to start out each morning and can be incorporated into any classroom. I encourage every teacher candidate or current educator to look at the classroom culture and how it can affect students, then incorporate a morning meeting system and see how the classroom culture changes.
